Washington Post hires AP’s Lerman to cover breaking tech news

Washington Post business editor David Cho, deputy business editor Zachary Goldfarb and technology editor Christina Passariello sent out the following announcement on Wednesday:

We are excited to announce that Rachel Lerman will be The Washington Post’s breaking news technology reporter in San Francisco.

Rachel joins us from the Associated Press, where she covered technology with a focus on Google. She explored the reasons we feel emotionally connected to household robots and examined how California’s new privacy law increases the burden on consumers.

Rachel also worked for five years as a technology reporter for the Seattle Times and the Puget Sound Business Journal. She tracked the Seattle region’s growing startup scene, the impact of Amazon’s expansion and Microsoft’s return to relevance. At the Seattle Times, Rachel wrote about the ethics of using facial recognition at an elementary school and the growing call for greater diversity at tech companies.
Rachel started her career covering local government at the Skagit Valley Herald, near Western Washington University, where she received a bachelor’s degree in journalism. The Pacific Northwest is her first home, though the sunshine and restaurants of San Francisco have persuaded her to adopt Northern California as a compelling second.
Rachel lives in San Francisco’s Lower Haight neighborhood. Before the spread of the coronavirus, she enjoyed reading in parks and persuading her friends who have cars to drive her to go hiking.

Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
