Thomson Reuters journalists get closer to strike

Katie Allen of The Guardian newspaper in London reports that journalists at Thomson Reuters are closer to striking to protest planned job cuts at the merged operations.

Allen writes, “At today’s meeting, staff passed a resolution that will be put to management on Monday: ‘This chapel is prepared to take industrial action in the event the company tries to impose compulsory redundancies and instructs its officers to move ahead with a strike ballot if the company imposes timelines for redundancies without consultation.’

“An NUJ official said: ‘The message from the chapel is clear, that they will not tolerate this kind of behaviour and management should be on notice that industrial action will follow swiftly if it does not moderate its behaviour and start to negotiate in an adult fashion.’

“He added that Thomson Reuters management was trying to ‘unilaterally impose’ a shortened timetable on a scheme for voluntary redundancies.”
