Tenacious reporting defines Kish’s career

Matthew Kish

Suzanne Stevens, the editor of the Portland Business Journal, writes about reporter Matthew Kish, who earlier this week was named a Knight-Bagehot fellow at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.

Stevens writes, “The Columbia Journalism School program is highly competitive. Just 10 fellows are selected for the honor each year. Matt’s class includes reporters from The Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg.

“Matt’s selection is a testament to the tenacious reporting that has defined his career so far. He relishes the chase of a good story and has spent weeks, months, even years doggedly pursuing leads. He is drawn to the kind of big, complex stories that are often buried in financial or legal documents; the kind of stories that make a difference.

“Matt has won seven national awards from the Society of American Business Editors and Writers, including the top prize for investigative journalism for his report on Oregon’s emergence as a hotbed for shell company abuse. He has won multiple awards from the Society of Professional Journalists and received the 2015 Bruce Baer Award, which honors Oregon’s top journalist in a given year.

“Matt covers finance, and sportswear and apparel for the Business Journal, and his coverage of Nike, in particular, has earned him a national following.”
