Brian Sozzi has been promoted to executive editor at TheStreet.com, according to his LinkedIn profile.

In an email to the staff, chief executive officer David Callaway wrote, “Brian’s done a fine job taking control of the newsroom and I couldn’t think of anyone with more energy and drive to push us forward next year with our new strategy tied to both premium subscription content and The Deal. Brian will report to both me and to Editorial Director Jim Cramer.”

TheStreet has been without a top editor in the newsroom since editor in chief Tara Murphy resigned in May. Earlier this month, it laid off 10 staffers, including a deputy managing editor and its personal finance editor.

Sozzi has been at the financial news site since May 2011. He most recently was a senior correspondent and an editor.

He has been the lead correspondent for TheStreet’s consumer coverage and the author of the daily “Daily Dose” column that discusses market-moving economic events, and potential long-term economic outcomes, and how to position one’s financial portfolio accordingly.

He has also been the author of the “Weekend Watcher” Saturday column that addresses such education-themed topics as investment strategies, mechanisms driving the market, and common investor misconceptions.

Sozzi was previously the CEO and chief equities strategist of Belus Capital Advisors, where he was responsible for providing independent investment research to both institutional and retail investors.
