Scholarships for SABEW conference

Scholarships are available for 10 professionals to attend the Society of American Business Editors and Writers annual conference March 19 to March 21 at the Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication in Phoenix.

The awards range from $299 to $1,000, announced SABEW executive director Warren Watson.

Two scholarships of $1,000 each will be awarded to minority journalists from SABEW’s Benita Newton Fund, set up to honor Newton, a young reporter who died in 2005, while in her first year of her first business journalism position at the Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk, Va.  Preference, of course, will be given to business journalists.

Interested candidates should mail a resume and a cover letter to Watson in care of SABEW, 555 North Central, Phoenix, AZ 85004.  In the letter prospective scholarship recipients should address two questions:  why they feel they are deserving of an award, and what they plan to do with the knowledge they gain from the three days of sessions at the conference.

SABEW also will award five $500 scholarships to the conference for deserving and passionate professional journalists.

Again, preference will be given to specialists in business journalism, particularly in the area of digital media. The awards will be drawn from the David Morrow Prize, a new fund set up in honor of Morrow.  The former editor of TheStreet.com and a SABEW board member, Morrow died recently of cancer.

The Morrow Prize will also fund three mini-scholarships of $299 each.  The scholarships can be used to pay registration to the Phoenix conference.

The Donald W. Reynolds National Center for Business Journalism is also offering two $1,000 scholarships to the SABEW conference, with preference given to those who want to attend all four sessions of the center’s multimedia track March 18-21.
