Eric Peterson of City Weekly in Salt Lake City is reporting that the Salt Lake Tribune has laid off its business editor.
The business editor was Michael Limón, and his name has been removed from the Tribune’s staff roster. However, Limon’s phone in the newsroom still has his voice mail.
In the City Weekly story, Tribune managing editor Terry Orme is quoted as saying, “We are refocusing our business coverage to emphasize consumer news. A news editor already on staff will direct those reporters.”
Limón has been in the newspaper industry for more than 25 years.
He was with the Gannett Co., where for more than a 12-year period he served as assistant managing editor at the Reno Gazette-Journal (1993-1997), managing editor at the Tucson Citizen (1997-2002) and executive editor of the Fort Collins Coloradoan (2002-2005).
He began his career as a reporter with the Wichita Eagle, before moving to a variety of editing positions at the Dallas Morning News, Sacramento Bee and then with Gannett. Limón has a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Oklahoma.
