Reuters has launched an application for the Google Android phones at a time when some of its business news competitors are just getting around to launching iPhone and Blackberry apps.
The content offered in the Android is consistent with the content on Reuters.com. The company says its goal is to serve its business professional audience and ensure they can access Reuters content across a multitude of platforms.
Reuters is now working to establish relationships with service providers to have the application pre-loaded on select devices.
A Reuters spokeswoman said that the company sees mobile as a behavior, not a technology. “The work we are doing in the media space is just a part of the mobile strategy company-wide to support our products and reinforce our brand awareness,” said the spokeswoman.
Marketwatch.com, CNBC and Fox Business have all launched iPhone apps in the past month.
Reuters launched its iPhone and Blackberry apps back in May. Since the launch, the applications have received more than 375,000 downloads collectively. In October, the 1.1 version for the iPhone was released with improved sharing capabilities.
