Reuters editor in chief Alessandra Galloni sent out the following to the staff on Tuesday:
Today, our newsroom published a Special Report on the death of our colleague Danish Siddiqui. This important story sheds light on some of our questions.
I want to emphasize here that the safety of our journalists is our priority as we pursue our unique brand of independent journalism. We have developed a rigorous security program for those in hostile environments, and we will work hard to strengthen and develop it for the future.
I also want to reiterate that I agreed to Danish’s embed with the Afghan Special Forces and, as editor-in-chief, I take full responsibility for the decision.
We will continue to review the events leading up to Danish’s death, as we seek to improve and ensure the safety of our newsroom. We will also continue to honor Danish’s memory in the years to come.
As ever, if you have questions for me, please do reach out.
