Recode hires data editor, politics and policy editor

RecodeRecodeTech news site Recode has hired a new policy editor and a politics and policy editor, reports Corinne Grinapol of Fishbowl.

Grinapol writes, “Rani Molla joins Recode as the publication’s first data editor, and will focus on using all the digital-age fixins–code, data, graphics–for reporting and stories. ‘For many business stories, a simple chart tells a much better, more interesting, and more dramatic story than hundreds of words. So it’s important for us to be great at this,’ writes Frommer in a note to staff. There will also be a lot of data visualization in Molla’s future at Recode, which begins March 27.

“She’ll be arriving from Bloomberg, where she’s been a data columnist for Bloomberg Gadfly. Prior to that she had been a visual journalist for The Wall Street Journal.

Tony Romm is joining Recode as senior editor, policy and politics, not ‘a subject area I expected we’d be spending much time on this year,’ writes Frommer of the role that ‘wasn’t part of [Recode’s] growth plans.’ That was Frommer’s pre-election expectation, but the results changed everything for Recode, as it did for so many people and organizations.

“‘Donald Trump’s election has made US policy and politics one of the biggest business stories in the world, and Recode has a unique opportunity to cover it, as innovation and policy increasingly collide,’ writes Frommer. ‘Tony will continue to focus on breaking news at the intersection of policy and tech, as well as introducing us to the most interesting people involved.'”
