OLD Media Moves

Puget Sound Business Journal to start tech news Web site

September 16, 2008

The Puget Sound Business Journal  announced Tuesday it will launch a technology news site and online community led by veteran journalists Todd Bishop and John Cook, the two tech reporters it hired away from the Seattle Post-Intelligencer

Puget Sound Business Journal“We intend to build the region’s pre-eminent technology news source, filled with breaking news and useful data, and enriched by the participation and involvement of people throughout the technology community,â€? said Emory Thomas Jr., publisher of the Puget Sound Business Journal and the new technology news site, in a statement.

“We are tremendously fortunate to enlist these two nationally recognized journalists to lead the new venture,” added Thomas, a former Wall Street Journal reporter. “By bringing Bishop and Cook into the Business Journal fold with our own national award-winning staff writer Eric Engleman, we have assembled a dream team of tech reporting expertise.â€?

Together, Bishop and Cook have more than 15 years of combined experience covering technology and business news in the Seattle region, most recently serving as reporters at the Post-Intelligencer.

They both will continue to blog on the new site, with Bishop covering Microsoft, and Cook covering venture capital, startups and entrepreneurs. The site will combine rigorous reporting with the immediacy of online publishing.

In an e-mail to sources and friends Tuesday afternoon, Bishop wrote, “I’ll continue to report on the technology industry and write a blog about Microsoft on the new site, so I hope to stay in contact with you as I make the transition and re-establish my coverage. In the new role, I’ll be able to apply myself almost exclusively to online efforts. I’m looking forward to seeing what happens when I can focus even more on blogging and other forms of online reporting.”

This new tech site will draw on the steadily growing subscriber base of the Puget Sound Business Journal and on the entire bizjournals network of local business journal sites.  Bizjournals.com reaches more than 8 million monthly unique visitors. Both the Puget Sound Business Journal and bizjournals.com are owned by American City Business Journals.

The technology news site will offer insight, analysis and breaking news on the Pacific Northwest’s growing technology industry, from startup companies to tech giants such as Microsoft, Amazon.com and Google.  The site will include guest columnists and interactive features to engage the technology community in new ways. Over time, the site also will serve as a gathering place where readers will be able to share information among themselves.

A preliminary launch of the new site is expected in the coming weeks, under a name and at a web address to be announced. Additional features and editorial content will be added over time.
