Pound, former WSJ investigative reporter, has died

Ed Pound

Ed Pound, a former investigative reporter for The Wall Street Journal, has died.

He worked at The Journal from April 1982 to April 1993 in the Washington bureau. He was “one of the greatest and most honorable investigative journalists of a generation,” wrote former Journal colleague Walt Mossberg on Twitter.

Pound was also an investigative reporter for The New York Times, US News & World Report, USA Today and the National Journal. He also led Al Jazeera America’s 16-person investigative reporting unit.

His investigative stories covered a wide range of topics including Iran-Contra, HUD, Abu Ghraib, Jack Abramoff influence peddling, numerous Clinton White House scandals, the International Olympic scandal, among many others. His stories on abuses in the issuance of security clearances at the Defense Department spurred legislative reforms.

Pound also worked as director of communications for the Recovery Accountability and Transparency Board, an independent federal agency that tracks how funds are spent under the economic stimulus program.

Chris Roush was the dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. He was previously Walter E. Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
