Charlotte Sutton, the health and science editor at the Philadelphia Inquirer, sent out the following announcement to the staff:
I am pleased to announce that Sarah Gantz is joining the Philadelphia Inquirer this month as our Health Costs reporter, which is a new beat made possible by a grant from the Lenfest Institute.
Sarah’s first task will be to help launch our new Philly Health Costs project, analyzing trends and data to inform in-depth coverage of a topic that is front and center for consumers, the health industry, and politicians.
Sarah comes to us from the Baltimore Sun, where she was a business reporter for nearly two years. Her daily and enterprise coverage included examining a health system’s conversion from an ACA-created co-op to private insurer and the formation of a union at the city’s gas and electric utility.
Before joining the Sun, she covered health care for four years at the Baltimore Business Journal, where her highlights included investigating
the failure of insurers to cover exorbitant air ambulance bills, spurring action by state insurance regulators.
A few years ago, Sarah was selected for a national Association of Health Care Journalists fellowship, in which she developed a project tying hospital revenue to quality improvement.
Sarah has worked all over the country, with shorter stints at the San Francisco Examiner, the Tribune newspapers’ D.C. bureau and the Boston Globe.
Sarah and her husband Chet have a dog, a cat, and are settling in at their home in Manyunk.
