NY Times hires Nguyen to cover banks

Lananh Nguyen

New York Times business editor Ellen Pollock sent out the following announcement on Monday:

We are thrilled to announce that Lananh Nguyen will be joining our finance team as a reporter in New York. She will principally write about banks.

Lananh comes to us from Bloomberg, where she most recently covered banks, wealth management, and market structure in New York. She joined Bloomberg in 2010 in London, and over time covered foreign exchange, hedge funds, asset managers, insurance and central bankers as well. She wrote for Bloomberg Businessweek and was a regular guest on Bloomberg TV.

Lananh started her reporting career in London writing about energy and the global financial crisis for Dow Jones and the Wall Street Journal.

While Lananh has broken news on countless companies on her beat, a story she wrote in 2004 shows just how deep her news roots go. As a college senior she wrote a story for the Tufts Daily on theFacebook.com, which at the time had 38,327 registered users. “It’s a fun project which a lot of people seem to enjoy,” one of the founders told Lananh. She pointed out there could be privacy issues with the site.

Lananh grew up in San Jose, California. She holds a BA in political science from Tufts, studied at the London School of Economics and expects to receive a Masters in finance and economic policy this year from the University of London.

Please give a hardy virtual welcome to Lananh.
