OLD Media Moves

NY Times hires Bloomberg’s Ovide to start a tech newsletter

Shira Ovide

New York Times business editor Ellen Pollock and technology editor Pui-Wing Tam sent out the following announcement on Friday:

We’re delighted to welcome Shira Ovide to The New York Times to help lead an exciting venture: a new technology newsletter.

Shira joins us from Bloomberg Opinion, where she has been a tech columnist since 2015. There she wrote three to five data-driven columns a week, skewering the foibles of companies like Facebook and WeWork (one of Shira’s lines: “WeWork is so unicorn, it hurts), dissecting their sometimes house-of-card businesses, taking tech titans like Larry Page to task, and analyzing surveillance, privacy and many other topics.

Before Bloomberg, Shira was at Dow Jones and The Wall Street Journal for more than a decade, both in New York and San Francisco. She covered media, was a deals columnist and reported on technology companies like Twitter.

At The Times, Shira will be the voice of a new daily newsletter that will take on the biggest stories in technology across all of our news desks and Opinion. She will explore how tech affects all aspects of modern life — how it touches culture, politics, industry and more — for techies and non-techies alike.

Raised in Ohio, Shira is a graduate of Haverford College and Columbia Journalism School. She is a cycling fan who believes Marianne Vos is the greatest of all time. One career highlight was being shooed off a video set for William Shatner during a live news show (at the 15 min, 45 second mark).

Please join us in welcoming Shira, who will be based in New York. She starts at The Times later this month.
