Newsday biz editor leaves for Bloomberg

Rick Green, assistant managing editor for business and technology at Newsday, announced to his staff on Thursday that he would be leaving to join news service Bloomberg as an editor at large. Green will be replaced by business editor Benjamin Weller, who now becomes AME for biz and technology, according to sources within the newspaper.

Green spent 10 years in Business at Newsday before leaving for SmartMoney magazine and later moving to BusinessWeek, where he was the small business editor. He returned to Newsday in 2002 as a deputy business editor and developed the Act II retirement section. He spent a year as business editor before becoming AME.

Last year, Newsday’s business section was a SABEW Best in Business award winner. The judges wrote, “Newsday combines coverage of national and international business news with strong reporting on local companies and trends to give its Long Island, N.Y., audience value-added business coverage. Particularly impressive was its thorough analysis of the paper’s practice of inflating its circulation numbers.”

Green is the second high-profile business editor to leave a daily newspaper in the past month to join Bloomberg as an editor. In January, the assistant managing editor for business at the Dallas Morning News, Edward Duffner, announced he was leaving that paper to join Bloomberg and edit transportation stories. Duffner’s last day is today.
