Newark page focuses on individuals and their savings

September 16, 2008

Allyson Murphy, who designs the business pages at the Newark Star-Ledger in New Jersey, writes, “We decided early on yesterday to focus not so much on the institutional part of the story, but more on the money and how this will affect individuals and their savings.

“I designed our Biz cover. We blew up our daily ‘Ask the Biz Brain’ feature which is usually stripped down the left side of the page, half a column wide. It focused on answering investor’s questions about how all this will affect them and what they should do.

“The lead was a Wall Street story and the second was a ‘Who’s to blame’ piece, both staff stories. We decided to use the whole cover, and I have to say it’s pretty fun to get to go 6 columns wide with a giant head. We also contemplated losing our normal bottom strip, but Jeff May’s Biz Buzz item about Lehman swag already up on eBay really tied right in.”
