New business magazine launches in Canada

Todd Babiak of The Edmonton Journal writes about Unlimited, a new business magazine launching in Canada.

Babiak wrote, “Ten years ago, a business magazine with an editor like Rubinstein and a team full of managers from Toronto and Vancouver titles like This and Shift and Adbusters wouldn’t have seemed possible in Alberta. Boosterism à la Conservatism was about all anyone wanted to read. Today, we live in an increasingly diverse and mature province, and a major aspect of that maturity is an ability to endure thoughtful criticism.

“‘There are serious problems in this province that need to be addressed,’ says Rubinstein. ‘And a magazine can be both: you can praise the good and criticize the bad, and do it side by side. That’s what I like, for example, about Toronto Life. They’ll profile a restaurant with $250 meals next to a story about crack addicts. A city is a democracy and democracy is kind of messy.’

“‘Look at the juxtaposition of the Hardware Grill and what’s on the rest of the block. That has to be addressed, but a lot of magazines don’t tell the truth about what’s really happening in Alberta.'”
