Muncie (Ind.) Star Press overhauls biz section

The Muncie Star Press has overhauled its section with new features and columnists and additional information. To do so, the Gannett newspaper has eliminated its Sunday stock listings.

Executive editor Evan Miller writes, “We’re significantly increasing the amount of local business information in the section, devoting all of page 2 of the section to news of interest to the business community, including a weekly profile of a new business.

“You’ll also find news of local business people who’ve been hired or promoted, a calendar of events and information about local workshops and classes to improve your business savvy.

“You’ll also find Ball State economist Patrick Barkey’s column on this page. On page 3, we are creating a weekly package of stories devoted to jobs and careers — how to get a job, find a job, keep a job.

“The cover story of the business section will be devoted to stories that reflect the diverse business news interests of our readers, with an emphasis on consumer topics, retailing and careers and jobs. Today’s cover story looks at the impact a new book store at the mall will have on . You’ll also find on the cover a new feature profiling different jobs in East Central Indiana through the eyes of a person who does the job, a local economic indicator statistic and a rotation of local columns on personal finance. The columns will cover investing, investing advice for readers 50 and older, insurance and saving money and dealing with debt.

“In order to increase the amount of content devoted to local business news and career information we have eliminated the Sunday stock listings. We realize that this will disappoint some readers, but we also know that the vast majority of our readers now get their stock report via the Internet and that trend is increasing daily. Sunday stock listings are no longer news to most readers when they can get the information they want whenever they want it online. For example, The Star Press’s web site — www.thestarpress.com — has up-to-the-minute stock quotes available on it, as well as other stock information.”
