MedCity News reporter leaves for Xconomy.com

Thomas Lee, MedCity News’ Minnesota bureau chief, is leaving to become the Detroit editor and national med-tech editor for Xconomy.com.

Chris Seper, the co-founder of MedCity News, writes, “Tom was MedCity’s first hire outside of Cleveland and our first foray into the medical device capital of the world. He’s been a force of nature: reporting scoops about Mayo Clinic spinoff companies to challenging conventional wisdom on Steven Burrill to leading the charge on an angel investor tax credit. He’s done thoughtful pieces on the big med-tech companies including Medtronic, St. Jude Medical and Boston Scientific.

“Xconomy covers some of the same topics MedCity handles (along with cleantech, IT and others) in Boston, San Diego, Seattle, San Francisco and Detroit. I wince that we’re losing him. But I’m happy for Tom because of the national opportunity it provides such a talented journalist.

“His departure also means we have an opening at MedCity News for the next Minnesota Bureau Chief. We’re going to perform a monthlong search for a new media-minded, business-oriented writer to chronicle the local medical industry for a national audience. The ideal candidate is passionate about the business of medicine and Minnesota, comfortable with social/new media and ready to publish copious amounts of creative, distinct and agenda-setting information that will continue making MedCity News the go-to source for medical news out of Minnesota.”
