Mathewson, longtime WSJ writer and editor, dies at 76

Bill Mathewson

William Mathewson, who worked at The Wall Street Journal from 1969 to 2007, died Saturday at the age of 76 after an illness.

Mathewson worked as a senior special writer and a senior editor at the paper. A U.S. Army veteran, he graduated from Yale University in 1961 and from Harvard Business School in 1965.

An internal post at The Journal about Mathewson stated:

In a distinguished career here, he brought his high standards and editorial finesse to many of our best and most memorable feature stories, including long stints on Page One and the Marketplace page (as B1 was called at the time).

Nancy Jeffrey, one of the Journal staffers that Mathewson worked with posted the following on his Facebook page:

He edited many of my second-front stories for the WSJ. He was the finest editor in a group of the finest editors. Whenever I got that call telling me Bill had my story, I knew he would bring his impeccable editing touch, probing journalist’s mind and humane and humorous personal style to the work. The story was so much better after it passed through Bill’s hands and I always felt so lucky and happy after working with him.
