Las Vegas R-J cuts stock listings

The Las Vegas Review-Journal becomes the latest metropolitan newspaper to cut its daily stock listings. The change began this week.

The paper wrote, “Beginning Tuesday, the Review-Journal will transform its multipage stock and mutual fund listings format into a single page called Markets at a Glance. The Markets at a Glance page will provide readers with a quick overview of the previous day’s financial markets, including an expanded Stocks of Local Interest list that will include several over-the-counter Bulletin Board stock listings that readers have requested in the past, Business Editor Michael Hiesiger said. The page also will offer summaries of market leaders and laggards among exchanges and mutual funds.”

The R-J is the first paper I’ve seen covering its change to quote an expert on the matter: “It’s been a trend for several years,” said Pam Luecke, the Donald W. Reynolds professor of Business Journalism at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va. “The people who did it first were doing it primarily to save money on newsprint. I think the people who are doing it now are doing it in part because of that, but also because readers’ habits have really changed. So many investors now check stock prices online that the value of printing (stock) tables has diminished.”
