William Serrin, the former labor reporter for the New York Times who is now a journalism professor, argued at a recent symposium in Pennsylvania that the decline of labor coverage in the media is partly to blame for the poor media reporting from the Sago mine disaster in West Virginia back in January.
“If we had better labor reporting, we’d have better reporting in general… We don’t have a lot of expertise that would help in this kind of reporting,â€? he said. “It’s a shame. I don’t know, right now, any good solutions.â€?
