Iowa paper brings back stock listings

Apparently the readers of the Waterloo Cedar-Falls Courier were not ready to give up their stock listings, according to a column by editor Saul Shapiro in Monday’s newspaper. He wrote that after the paper cut its stock listings, hundreds of readers called to complain.

Shapiro writes, “But what may play on Broadway or off Michigan Avenue didn’t pass its tryout on the corner of Commercial and Park.

“The rationale was that more up-to-date and comprehensive listings are only a mouse click away on the Internet. Indeed, the Courier’s site — www.wcfcourier.com/stocks — features listings for individual stocks and the exchanges on only a 20-minute delay.

“The print version of the Courier doesn’t have the wherewithal to provide that universe of stock and commodity offerings nor the timeliness — our stocks are from the previous day’s close — of our online counterpart.

“But you called — a few hundred of you — to say the print version is still necessary.

“We listened. And we are responding.

“The print version of the stocks and commodities will be restored, beginning Tuesday.”
