Houston Chronicle names Al Lewis its business editor

Al Lewis, currently the editor of the South Florida Business Journal, has been named the business editor of the Houston Chronicle.

He replaces Laura Goldberg, who has been named senior editor for niche, new products and training. She had been business editor at the Chronicle since 2006 and at the paper since 1998.

Lewis had joined the American City Business Journals paper in July 2014. He previously had been a columnist for The Wall Street Journal and MarketWatch.com, and a business columnist for the Denver Post.

Lewis will start on April 1.

In addition, Rob Gavin, Sunday business editor at the Boston Globe, has been hired as the Chronicle’s energy editor.

As the Sunday business editor, Gavin has been overseeing coverage of the economy, energy, and financial services. Previously, he covered economics, energy, and media for the Globe.

Gavin will start at the Chronicle on April 11.

Also, Ronnie Crocker, a veteran Chronicle editor with extensive stints in metro, state and features, has been promoted to deputy business editor.

Crocker also writes the Beer, TX blog. He’s also author of the 2012 book “Houston Beer: A Heady History of Brewing in the Bayou City,” which drew on his Houston Chronicle reporting about the Bayou City’s burgeoning local industry.
