Herald biz reporter to head program at Florida International

Miami Herald business reporter Gregg Fields announced that he is leaving the paper and will start a business journalism program at Florida International University.

Fields wrote this in a note to The Daily Pulp blog: “I will leaving the Herald in August, altho’ I hope to write guest columns if they want them on economic subjects. And I may even do some freelance editing during breaks, etc., if they’re short-handed.

“I will have been at the Herald for 19 years as of March 9. As I recall, I wrote a story my first day — about the problems Chalk’s airline was having. My first front-page story was later that week, about how the phone cable to Cuba was disintegrating. For either of those stories, I’m pretty sure not much has changed.”

Editor & Publisher also has a story from a press release that I can not find on the Internet. It included this information: “We are excited that Fields has decided to join the SJMC faculty,” said Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver, the school’s dean and professor. “He will bring the expertise and credibility needed to make us one of the top business journalism programs in the nation.”

In addition to The Miami Herald, Fields has worked at The Cincinnati Enquirer, The Wall Street Journal, and The Courier-Journal in Louisville, Ky.

This is a great move by Florida International and contributes to the growing business journalism academic field.
