Doug Fruehling, the new editor of the San Francisco Business Times, writes about his decision to leave the Washington Business Journal.
Fruehling writes, “So when my company, American City Business Journals, floated the idea of moving to the Bay Area to be editor of the San Francisco Business Times, I was intrigued. Despite my Midwest and East Coast roots, I’ve always been enchanted by the West Coast — a 2017 trip to Seattle heightened that — and I began to consider it. I had only been to San Francisco once, when I was 24. I still remember the thrill of driving over the Golden Gate Bridge.
“The timing wasn’t quite right for my personal life. My partner was recently named state librarian for North Carolina and was committed to a life in Raleigh for the foreseeable future. A relocation to Raleigh wasn’t in the cards for me, so I decided to stay in D.C. and let the idea of San Francisco slip away.
“But it wasn’t easy to let the idea go. I couldn’t stop thinking about the new experiences I could have on the West Coast and the value I could bring to our sister paper, which, obviously, is in one of the most dynamic business markets in the world — a leader in tech and biotech and a thrilling study in urbanism, real estate and economic disparity.”
