Freeland named head of Thomson Reuters digital operations

The following announcement was sent out to the staff by Reuters editor in chief Stephen Adler:

In our early conversations in February, I focused on the importance of our Internet and mobile platforms in attracting a committed audience and bringing widespread attention to our work, our brand and our values.

With news users’ habits changing rapidly, and competitors getting better all the time, we have to be distinctive, creative and contemporary as we drive to distinguish ourselves as the world’s leading source for news. Digital media will provide an increasingly important global showcase for the agenda-setting news, insights, analysis and enterprise reporting that we produce.

That’s why I am especially delighted to announce the appointment of Chrystia Freeland to the newly created role of Editor, Thomson Reuters Digital.  Based in New York, Chrystia will report directly to me.

Effective Monday, April 11, Chrystia will assume editorial control of the company’s consumer online, mobile and digital properties. She will manage a team that will select, customize, assign and produce text and multimedia content delivered to consumers via Reuters.com and its global suite of websites, as well as the flagship mobile news applications including NewsPro.  Chrystia’s team will also lead the continuing enhancement of the customer experience and design of those platforms, as well as commission and edit Op-Ed contributions to our platforms, and supervise Newsmakers and Summits to ensure a strong digital presence for those thought-leadership events. Plus, she and the team will explore exciting new projects in the digital space.

Keith McAllister, General Manager for Consumer Media, will continue to be the publisher and work in close partnership with Chrystia and her team.

Chrystia brings to her new role a deep understanding of the importance of multimedia and a clear vision of the future of journalism. She has been Reuters global editor-at-large since last year. Prior to joining Thomson Reuters, Chrystia held a wide range of roles with the Financial Times – most recently as U.S. managing editor where she led the editorial development of the newspaper’s U.S. print and online edition. Before that, she was editor of FT.com and Weekend FT, UK news editor, Moscow bureau chief and Eastern Europe correspondent.  She has brought her experience and wealth of sources from her time at the Financial Times and other media outlets including The Globe & Mail, where she was Deputy Editor, The Washington Post and The Economist.

Chrystia will continue to write her weekly column for Reuters platforms, the International Herald Tribune and The Globe & Mail.

Please join me in congratulating Chrystia on her new role and wishing her every success.

In the coming weeks, I will outline the broader Editorial structure and introduce other new members of the senior leadership team.
