Biz journalist a finalist for Deadline Club award for beat reporting

Jon Hilsenrath of The Wall Street Journal is a finalist in the beat reporting category for the annual Deadline Club Awards.

Hilsenrath is the chief economics correspondent for The Journal and is based in Washington. He is responsible for covering the Federal Reserve. In cooperation with reporters in the economics and other bureaus, he also covers major developments in the U.S. and global economies for all print and on-line editions of The Journal and contributes to WSJ.com’s Real Time Economics site. Prior to his current position, Hilsenrath was markets editor, overseeing global coverage of stock, bond and currency markets.

In addition, Ben Casselman, Russell Gold and Angel Gonzalez of The Journal are finalists in the spot news category for  “Blast Jolts Oil World,” the story about the Deepwater Horizon/BP oil rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico.

Neil Parmar of  SmartMoney is a finalist in the series or investigative reporting category for magazines for “Too Close for Comfort” about how many financial firms are sponsoring or paying for academic studies.

Allan Dodds Frank of The Daily Beast is a finalist in the online reporting category for his Bernie Madoff breaking news coverage.

Kristina Cooke, Pedro da Costa and Emily Flitter of Thomson Reuters are finalists in the online enterprise reporting category for “The Ties that Bind at the Federal Reserve.”

The finalists in the business feature category are Bryan Burrough of Vanity Fair, “What’s Eating Steve Cohen,” Anne Kadet of  SmartMoney for “Looking for One Last Job” and Peter Robinson, Asjylyn Loder and Alan Bjerga of Bloomberg Businessweek for “Amber Waves of Pain.”

The finalists in the business news series or investigative category are Michael Lewis of Vanity Fair for “Beware of Greeks Bearing Bonds,” Amanda Bennett of Bloomberg Businessweek for “The End of Life” and the staff of  The Journal for “On the Inside.”

Also, Paul LaMonica of CNN Money is a finalist in the opinion writing category.

The Deadline Club Awards are presented by the New York chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and honor the best in New York area journalism – printed, broadcast or otherwise distributed in 2010. Winners will be announced at the annual awards dinner at the historic Waldorf Astoria Hotel on May 16.
