It’s my pleasure to welcome three wonderful new colleagues (to say nothing of a new owner!) to our FORTUNE family. Those in New York have already met Tamara El Waylly and Rey Mashayekhi—and if you haven’t yet said hello in person, please do. And Danielle Abril has joined us as well in our San Francisco office. Here’s a brief bit of background about each.
Danielle Abril is a reporter and editor who covered the Dallas-Fort Worth area for more than 10 years with news organizations including the Dallas Morning News, Dallas Business Journal, and D CEO magazine. When she started covering technology five years ago, she was the sole reporter on the beat, which gave her exclusive access to major companies. The El Paso native enjoys Latin dancing, eating good food, Netflix binging, and attacking new challenges. Initially, she’ll work from Dallas, and then move to San Francisco office in January.
Tamara El Waylly joins us as an editor for our commentary section. She’s a recovering United Nations nerd and reported from its HQ for the last three and a half years on behalf of the Asahi Shimbun, one of Japan’s national newspapers. A rap, hip hop, soul, and BTS fan, she always has headphones on and sometimes doesn’t realize she’s singing out loud. (Prepare yourselves, newsroom denizens.) As a Bolivian-Egyptian raised in Qatar, there’s really no one place she considers her hometown. Tamara studied journalism at the George Washington University in D.C. and then international affairs at the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University. She lives in Manhattan with her 13-year-old cat named, appropriately, Kitty.
Rey Mashayekhi was most recently at the Commercial Observer, where he covered the outsize egos, big deals, and house-of-cards financing schemes of New York’s commercial real estate market, writing profiles and features as well as breaking news. He grew up in the Washington, D.C. area, then studied journalism in New York at the New School. Rey started his career covering metals commodities at Euromoney Institutional Investor before becoming a real estate reporter at the Real Deal. He’ll be covering finance and the markets for Fortune, but his interests range from cryptocurrency to China to sports. (Ask him about the murky world of agents’ fees in soccer.) Rey lives in Greenpoint with his girlfriend and their cat, Dobby; and yes, we’ll tell Tamara and Rey about #fortune-pets.
Please offer them all a hearty welcome! Thank you. CL
