Janet Lowe, former business editor of the San Diego Union-Tribune, died Dec. 31 at the age of 79.
John Wilkens of the Union-Tribune writes, “After years of public-relations work, freelance writing and stints at small papers, Lowe became business editor and columnist at the San Diego Tribune, helping to re-shape the department. ‘She made it into something that was serious, analytical and forward-thinking, instead of just responding to news,’ said Liz Douglass, one of the reporters Lowe hired.
“By the late 1980s, she was also writing books, and she left the newspaper to do that full-time. She eventually authored 23, with the Buffett one the best-known. She had four interviews with him and pulled together quotes, writings and other material for a unique look into his philosophy and personality. It got significant media attention, including a photo in Money Magazine of Buffett holding the book.
“They stayed in touch and for many years Lowe attended the annual gathering in Omaha, Neb., of shareholders in Buffett’s company, Berkshire Hathaway.”
