Former SABEW board member leaving business

Former SABEW board member Mary Flannery has left the Philadelphia Inquirer, where she was once business editor, and is becoming an executive in the Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce.

The Inquirer made the announcement in Monday’s paper. Flannery has been named senior vice president, communications, of the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce effective May 1. She is a reporter for the Philadelphia Daily News and had been business editor of The Inquirer.

Flannery began her career as a sportswriter for the Trenton Times, and then covered sports for the Philadelphia Daily News. She then took her talents to New York City as a writer for the New York Daily News and later worked with NBC Sports. After seven years in New York, Flannery returned to the Philadelphia Daily News as health and medical reporter.

Flannery was elected to the SABEW board in 2003, but left in 2005 when she took on duties at the Inquirer outside of the newsroom. She also was a speaker at business reporting seminars run by the Donald W. Reynolds National Center for Business Journalism.

A press release from the chamber is here.
