Former Columbus Dispatch business reporter dies at 56

Phil Porter, a former Columbus Dispatch business reporter during the past two decades, has died from cancer at the age of 56, according to a short story in Monday’s paper.

The story stated, “A native of Euclid, near Cleveland, Porter’s work for the newspaper began in 1991, when he joined the business news staff as a reporter. He became an editorial writer in 1994 and in 1999 briefly worked as a city-desk reporter before returning to the business news department. He left the newspaper in 2005.

“Porter, of Columbus, also wrote columns for the newspaper about his battle with kidney cancer and tackled topics of interest to cancer patients. He wanted to let others know that it was possible to live with the disease.

“‘Cancer being a part of Phil’s life gave him a voice to want to educate the rest of us who don’t live with cancer on a daily basis,’ said his wife, Kathleen Porter. ‘God knew he wasn’t capable of playing the victim.'”
