Former CNNMoney exec editor Haris resigns after Russia story

Former CNNMoney executive editor Lex Haris resigned on Monday in the wake of a retracted story from the investigative unit that he now runs.

Haris had taken over the investigative team back in January.

He had been with CNNMoney since 2001, and had been the site’s managing editor from 2007 to 2014. Among his many accomplishments was taking the CNNMoney staff away from commoditized news gathering, and building out the newsroom with a team of smart journalists – not only in New York, but in London and Hong Kong.

Lisa De Moraes of Deadline Hollywood writes, “The article was published on CNN’s web site; it also was shared on CNN’s social media platforms. It did not air on CNN.

“‘In the aftermath of the retraction of a story published on CNN.com, CNN has accepted the resignations of the employees involved in the story’s publication,’ a network spokesman said. The network has said management investigated and found standard editorial processes were not followed in publishing the article.

“CNN’s media pundit Brian Stelter reported those ‘types of stories’ typically  are reviewed by several departments within CNN before publication. That includes  fact-checkers, journalism standards experts, and lawyers.

“In a staff meeting Monday afternoon, investigative unit members were told that the retraction did not mean the facts of the story were necessarily wrong.”
