Florida newspaper wants readers to contribute items

The Charlotte Sun-Herald newspaper in southwest Florida is asking for business owners to submit short items for its Biz Bits section that runs every Friday. Sounds a lot like citizen journalism.

Business editor Bob Fliss writes in Thursday’s newspaper: “Biz Bits, which runs every Friday, is our latest attempt to add more variety to our business coverage. It was intended as a sort of catchall for short business news that we couldn’t put anywhere else.

“Our Sunday ‘Movers and Shakers’ feature concentrates on news about individuals — appointments, awards and promotions. So far, we’ve been able to fill Biz Bits mainly with notices of upcoming events, especially those involving the chambers of commerce.

“This is a good start but I’d like to cast the net a bit wider. That’s why I’m encouraging all local businesses to get more aggressive about sending us items for Biz Bits.

“For example, I’d like to hear a lot more from commercial real estate brokers about any recent sales or leases. After all, these are business-to-business transactions — both you and your client benefit from the publicity. And we would hope that the public would like to know about local businesses that are opening or relocating.”
