First Courier-Journal biz editor dies

November 21, 2008

Rodney Wenz, the first business editor of the Louisville Courier-Journal back in 1969 and later a PR professional in the city, died Wednesday, according to a story in the paper.

“Wenz was The Courier-Journal’s first business editor, appointed in 1969 after coming to the newspaper in 1967 as a business reporter. Former Courier-Journal publisher George Gill once credited Wenz in a news story with ‘nudging the paper toward serious business news coverage.’

“‘Rod had a good business head on his shoulders and he understood business and business people,’ Loomis said. ‘He did some good stuff while he was there, got out of the office and talked to people.’

“Neely said he met Wenz while working with the news media. Neely had come to Louisville to run an office of the public relations firm Holder, Kennedy & Co., based in Nashville, Tenn., mainly for client Kentucky Fried Chicken.”
