The media must not abandon their duty to accuracy or fuel the flames of fear during the current financial crisis, said business journalist Maryanne McNellis in a speech Monday on the University of Montana campus.
Kayla Matzke of the Montana Kaimin writes, “Each media outlet is covering the economy differently. Viewers and readers are getting different perspectives from NBC news to Fox News to USA Today, which are all covering the crisis with different perspectives, she said. Talking heads can fuel the panic.
“‘Economic news is the tsunami of today,’ McNellis said.
“Business news has jumped into mainstream news and it has come under the microscope of those who aren’t familiar with it.”
