William N. Clark, the financial editor of the Chicago Tribune from 1956 to 1969, died Saturday. He was 90.
Trevor Jensen of the Tribune writes, “Joining the Chicago Tribune in 1941 as a business reporter, Mr. Clark was the newspaper’s financial editor from 1956 until 1969. During that time, he hosted two televised business programs, ‘Ticker Tape’ on WTTW Ch. 11 and ‘Investors Forum’ on WGN-TV Ch. 9.
“‘He was tops. There wasn’t anything he didn’t know about the business world,’ retired Tribune reporter Bob Wiedrich said. ‘And he passed it on to the platoon of reporters who came through the business section.’
“The business environment changed dramatically during his tenure as financial editor: TV became dominant over radio; air travel superseded trains; and interest in stocks grew as more people had money to invest amid postwar prosperity.”
