CityLab relaunched under Bloomberg umbrella

When Bloomberg acquired CityLab from Atlantic Media last year, the company said that CityLab would remain a standalone site for the time being.

Now, Bloomberg has relaunched CityLab and the new site lives at bloomberg.com/citylab.

Bloomberg CityLab features redesigned branding, logos, and a menu linking to other Bloomberg verticals and the company’s data terminal. CityLab content will soon also be available across Bloomberg platforms, including Businessweek magazine, TV, radio and videos.

Julia Beizer, Bloomberg Media’s chief product officer, said, “As we expand and as we grow our subscription business, we’re looking for content that touches a wider group of audience and is closely connected to what we do best, which is global business. When [CityLab] came up, it felt like a sweet spot because cities are so key to economies and how they work.”

In addition, CityLab also fits with an existing template that Bloomberg has sought to expand online.

“Increasingly, on the web, we’ve been focused on different kinds of verticals that are essentially, ‘The Future of X,’” executive editor Jennifer Sondag said. “For the future of healthcare, we have Prognosis. Future of retail, we have Checkout. Green is, essentially, the future of the world. And CityLab is the future of cities.”

Sondag added that CityLab content, including archives will remain unpaywalled — at least through 2020.

However, the site will feature occasional paywalled articles from other quarters of Bloomberg News.
