Changes coming to Portfolio.com

J. Jennings Moss, the editor of Portfolio.com, writes about changes coming to the business news site, the first substantial changes since it was taken over by American City Business Journals after Conde Nast Portfolo magazine folded.

Moss writes, “The focus will continue to be on entrepreneurs, startup companies, emerging businesses, and innovation. We’ll just be doing it, to paraphrase from the opening of The Six Million Dollar Man, to create a site ‘better than it was before. Better. Stronger. Faster.’

“It’s the most significant change to the Portfolio brand since we started publishing as part of American City Business Journals in August 2009. That was actually the first big change for the site since it reflected its move from Condé Nast Publications to ACBJ, corporate siblings that are part of the Advance Publications family.

“Originally known as Condé Nast Portfolio, the publication launched in April 2007 under the editorial direction of Joanne Lipman. She set out to create a glossy, high-impact magazine and companion website that gave readers a deep understanding of high finance, big companies, brash corporate leadership, and the cultural trends that were shaping global business. The problem with Lipman’s plan was that reality intruded—the Great Recession was about to begin, and one of its biggest targets was the advertising-dependent publishing industry.

“Of course, this kind of pain and turmoil was great fodder for a financial publication trying to make a mark. And Condé Nast Portfolio published some truly groundbreaking work through the likes of Jesse Eisinger, who went on to win a Pulitzer Prize for his continued reporting on the economic collapse for ProPublica, and Michael Lewis, who penned what was then the definitive tale of what went wrong on Wall Street (that piece, “The End”, became the single-most-visited story in Portfolio.com’s history).”
