Casino amends complaint against business editor

A Las Vegas casino has filed an amended complaint against Jeff Simpson, the business editor of the Las Vegas Sun, alleging defamation, according to a story in the Sun on Saturday.

A short story in the paper stated, “The initial defamation lawsuit filed by Sands, parent company of the Venetian, was dismissed in November by District Judge Michelle Leavitt. She stipulated that the company could amend its complaint if it could make a ‘substantively’ different legal argument for defamation than in the original lawsuit.

“The lawsuit centers on a Simpson column in which he analyzed the competition for a Singapore gaming license, which was won by Sands. The company objected to the column’s analysis that Sands had a ‘sorry Nevada regulatory record.’

“Simpson relied on the state Gaming Control Board’s February 2004 prosecution of Sands alleging 12 counts of violating gaming regulations. Sands, though, argues that the column omitted the regulatory records of the company’s competitors, ‘which stack up no better than Plaintiff’s.'”
