Carpenter wins Excellence in Business reporting award from NLGJA

Julia Carpenter

Julia Carpenter has won this year’s “Excellence in Business Coverage” award from NLGJA: The Association of LGBTQ Journalists.

Her story was written while she worked at CNN Money and was titled “When work puts you back in the closet.” Carpenter is now a reporter at The Wall Street Journal.

NLGJA’s Excellence in Journalism Awards were established in 1993 to foster, recognize and reward excellence in journalism on issues related to the LGBTQ community.

In recent years, the program was expanded to more than 30 categories. The awards will be presented at the NLGJA National Convention, to be held Aug. 29 to Sept. 1 in New Orleans.

At CNN Business, Carpenter covered the intersection between gender and money.

Carpenter also previously worked as a social media editor embedded within The Washington Post features section, where she plots audience strategy for special projects and brands in arts criticism, lifestyle, pop culture and more.

She also ran The Post’s Tumblr, and she pitches in with social strategy for multiple Post brands. She also worked with audience engagement and user-generated content and in The Post’s many ancillary communities, such as the Facebook group associated with our veterans’ issues series, “After the Wars.”
