BuzzFeed, STAT, CNBC win 2021 EPPY Awards

The following winners have been named winners in the annual EPPY Awards for digital media:

Judges’ comments: Very good interactive elements 

Finalists: Fortune for “Fortune: Crypto at a Turning Point” AND CNET for “Why your iPhone may never be made in America”

Best business reporting (fewer than 1 million unique visitors):
STAT for: “Groundbreaking Coverage of Momentous Alzheimer’s Drug Approval
Judges’ comments: Very thorough breakdown of a complex business and its relationship with the government.

Finalists: THE CITY for “New York in Job Hunt as City Seeks Economic Comeback from COVID” AND STAT for “Epic’s AI Algorithms, Shielded from Scrutiny”

Best business/finance blog (fewer than 1 million unique visitors):
InvestmentNews for “Mary Beth Franklin On Retirement”
Judges’ comments: Well-written description of the contents of a report of an online study of how attitudes about retirement have been affected by the pandemic. 

Finalist: STAT for “Ed Silverman’s enormously popular Pharmalot blog”

Best Business/finance website (1 million or more unique visitors)
CNBC for CNBC.com
Judges’ comments: CNBC provides multiple positive ways to engage with its brand through newsletter sign-ups, videos, special sections, and integration of trending topics.

Finalist: CNN for CNN Business

Best business/finance website (fewer than 1 million unique visitors):
GrowthSpotter for GrowthSpotter.com
Judges’ comments: The categorization and tagging of articles provide a simple yet effective way for consumers to find the content most relevant to them.

Best podcast (fewer than 1 million unique visitors):
Bloomberg Industry Group for “Black Lawyers Speak: Stories of the Past
Judges’ comments: Great combination of information you didn’t know (which others try to do as well), but this is combined with great storytelling, production value and pace.

Finalists: The Heist Podcast Team, Center for Public Integrity for “The Heist” AND The (Rock Hill) Herald for “Return Man”

Chris Roush

Chris Roush was the dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. He was previously Walter E. Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
