Business journal files to dismiss slander suit

The Springfield Business Journal in Missouri has filed a motion to dismiss a slander lawsuit brought against the paper by a man who advocated that taxation is un-Christian.

Jaime Baranyai of the Springfield News-Leader wrote that two men who took the advice and didn’t pay taxes for five years were recently interviewed by the paper.

Baranyai wrote, “Then men have since repaid their debts — a total of several hundred thousand dollars — and gone on a speaking tour for the government discouraging others from getting involved in illicit tax protests.

“It was during the tour they were interviewed by the Springfield Business Journal and profiled in a November article.

“It’s that story — and the comments in it — that led Springer to sue, alleging he was libeled and slandered.

“In the lawsuit, Springer says his reputation was defamed, and is suing each of the six defendants for $1,000,000. He also demanded a jury trial.”
