OLD Media Moves

Business Insider promotes three editors, hires nine new editors

Alyson Shontell, the editor of Business Insider, sent out the following announcement to the staff:

Hello, Business Insider newsroom!

As you know, we’ve been hiring at a rapid clip. In the past few weeks, we’ve brought on 23 new people, many of whom are reporters.

But a great newsroom isn’t run on bylines alone; it also requires strong editors who work tirelessly behind the scenes and push us to tell the best stories.

As such, we have some exciting new promotions and leadership hires to announce.

Promotions

Cadie Thompson, deputy executive editor, will be taking on more of the newsroom. Cadie has done an exceptional job overseeing the tech, transportation, and retail desks. Moving forward, she will oversee another big arm — our advertising, media, and PR desks. She will work with Lucia Moses to build those up even further.

Olivia Oran is also being promoted to deputy executive editor and will oversee another big portion of the newsroom: healthcare, energy, legal, finance, investing, and markets. She will work closely with Matt Turner on editorial initiatives for our subscription service.

Meredith Mazzilli is being promoted to senior finance editor after doing an incredible job managing the fast-growing team.

New leadership

Graham Starr. Graham joined us from The New York Times late last year and is our senior tech editor.

Jake Swearingen. Jake will join us next week from Consumer Reports as deputy editor, overseeing tech, retail, and transportation, reporting to Cadie Thompson.

Michelle Abrego. Michelle joined us from City Wire as finance editor, working with Meredith Mazzilli.

Jennifer Eum. Formerly of Inc, Fast Company, and Forbes, Jennifer joins us as a senior editor on Debbie Strong’s contributors desk. She’s bringing in the smartest industry voices for features and op-eds.

Nick Lichtenberg. Nick joins us from Bloomberg and is senior editor on the strategy and executive-lifestyle desks. He’ll be overseeing wealth coverage and features with Drake Baer.

Rachel Gillett. Sr. editor Rachel Gillett and her team of visual features reporters are moving to the strategy and executive-lifestyle desks. They’ll work with Drake to bring the coolest jobs and experiences to life through photography.

Alanis King. Alanis, who was previously at Jalopnik, is associate editor of transportation working with Bryan Logan.

Deb Bose. Deb is a new associate editor of visual features working with Rachel Gillett. She was previously at BuzzFeed.

Michael Domanico. Michael has joined the managing-editors team as assistant managing editor. He’ll be focused on helping us hire even more fellows, reporters, and editors for the newsroom. If you know of someone great, we have tons of open positions.

The incredible journalism you produce every day makes each of these hires possible. I’m proud to be building Business Insider with all of you.

Alyson
