Business Insider names new West Coast bureau chief, chief tech correspondent

Business Insider editor in chief Alyson Shontell sent out the following message on Wednesday:

Thanks, Hi everyone, Happy New Year.

Let’s kick it off with some great news: We’re thrilled to announce that Alexei Oreskovic has been promoted to West Coast Bureau Chief and Tech Editor. He will oversee our San Francisco team, which he has already helped build into an exceptional reporting bureau. We are also excited to announce that Julie Bort, a five-year veteran of Business Insider who has more than three decades of reporting and editing experience, has been named Chief Tech Correspondent.

Alexei joined Business Insider two years ago from Reuters, where he spent seven years as a technology correspondent. With more than two decades of industry experience, Alexei has proven invaluable to Business Insider’s team and to our coverage of Silicon Valley. Under his leadership as Deputy Tech Editor, Business Insider has produced a steady stream of high-impact work, from market-moving scoops to big-name interviews to deeply-reported investigations.

In his new role, Alexei will continue to grow the tech team out west with plans to hire another senior member. He’ll also be more hands on with other west-coast based verticals, such as innovation and the evening news team, lending help and mentorship where needed. Steven Tweedie and Dave Smith will continue to work with Alexei to run the east coast tech team.

Julie Bort is another exceptional talent. Having spent nearly 30 years in journalism, Julie is one of the best reporters in the industry. She deeply understands everything Business Insider is about, having successfully grown our enterprise section to millions of monthly readers, and written must-read investigations — like the unraveling of unicorn startup, Zenefits. In her new role, we will give Julie more time and space to devote to the high-impact stories that will help take our reporting to the next level.

Please join me in giving the two of them a very big congrats!
