Brown, special projects director at Quartz, dies from cancer

Lauren Brown

Lauren Brown, the director of special projects at Quartz, died Tuesday from cancer. She was 37.

It’s been a really rough day at the office. Everyone who worked with her is missing her greatly,” wrote technology editor Mike Murphy on Twitter.

She was one of Quartz’s founding editors in 2012 and was its first deputy ideas editor.

Brown developed high-concept, ambitious journalistic projects and was responsible for coordinating the editorial, design, and marketing efforts behind them.

Before her tenure at Quartz, she worked at Business Insider as their contributors’ editor. She oversaw all contributors and syndication partnerships and was responsible for an overhaul of the entire program.

Brown received her master’s from Columbia’s School of Journalism where she specialized in digital media. She also worked for WorldNow, Wiley and was a contributing writer for Movmnt Magazine. She received her undergraduate degree from Cornell University where she majored in English and history.
