Bloomberg News editor in chief John Micklethwait sent out the following on Thursday:
It is with deep sadness that I have to write to you all about the sudden passing of our colleague and friend, Sho Chandra.
She began her Bloomberg career in 1998 as a General Assignment and Consumer reporter in our Princeton bureau. In 2005, she relocated to Washington, DC to join the Economy team where her work was at the core of what we do at Bloomberg: poring over government data to tell the world something much more important than the numbers themselves, what they meant and why they mattered. Our readers were smarter because of her dedication, knowledge and close attention to accuracy and fairness.
For those of us lucky enough to have known her as a colleague and friend, she was unfailingly gracious, funny and loyal. She took enormous pride in her work and frequently was a mentor to less experienced reporters and the countless interns who thrived under her tutelage. She will be greatly missed.
Chandra, a SABEW board member, covered the U.S. economy, from jobs and consumer spending to manufacturing, trade, prices and housing.
She previously worked in New Delhi for two of India’s biggest business newspapers, Economic Times and Financial Express, around the time the South Asian economy was opening up to the rest of the world in a bigger way.
Chandra also is a member of the National Press Club, where she helped with editing the NPC’s Wire and with judging for scholarship awards. Her master’s degrees include MSJ from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, and MA in Economics from Delhi University, India.
