Bloomberg hires Kelly, Welch for consumer tech team

Mark Gurman, Bloomberg’s managing editor for global consumer tech, sent out the following on Wednesday:

In March, we announced plans to expand coverage of consumer technology. Our aim is to report on the world’s leading hardware companies more deeply than ever–aiming to break news on every major consumer tech launch, diving into the details of new products and trends and delivering best-in-class reviews across smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, TVs, audio gear, fitness trackers, glasses and headsets.

We’ve made progress toward those goals, with reviews of several major devices, including the iPhone 16e and Powerbeats Pro 2, as well as under-the-radar products like a robotic vacuum with an arm capable of picking up socks.

Today, I’m thrilled to announce outstanding additions to our team: Samantha Murphy Kelly and Chris Welch, two of the most respected names in consumer tech journalism.

Samantha brings a wealth of experience from her time at CNN, CNET and Mashable. At Bloomberg, she’ll focus on features, explainers, and breaking hardware news tied to major players like Meta, Amazon, Google, Microsoft and Samsung, bringing her reputation for in-depth storytelling and knack for spotting new trends first. She’ll also be our lead on Peloton, Garmin and the emerging home robotics space. Expect to see her regularly on Bloomberg TV, across our social and video platforms, and as a regular on our forthcoming Apple and consumer tech-focused podcast.

Chris joins us after more than a decade at The Verge, where he was among early hires. He established himself as one of the best product reviewers in the business, providing sharp insights, attention to detail and excellent photography. He’ll lead our reviews coverage, report on product launches, break consumer tech news, and continue his standout reporting on Sonos. Chris will also be a regular contributor to our podcast and video programming.

Sam and Chris will report to me and start on May 19. They will also work closely with Dana Wollman, our senior editor and pod leader, and Natalie Lung, who covers consumer apps. Vlad Savov will contribute from Hong Kong, covering local gadget players alongside his responsibilities as an editor on the Asia tech team.

Please congratulate and welcome Sam and Chris. We’re just getting started, and I couldn’t be more excited about what’s ahead.
