As ideas editor, Sarah Green Carmichael will recruit a diverse array of expert writers, translate new academic research for investors, and foster debate over solutions to the biggest challenges facing companies and the global economy.
Carmichael comes to Barron’s from Harvard Business Review, where she was an executive editor. Her primary role at HBR was shaping editorial content for HBR.org, which won the Webby Award for Best Business Website the last three years in a row. She also hosted the weekly HBR IdeaCast for 10 years, launched and co-hosted the Women at Work podcast — which recently won an Eddie Award from Folio — and edited magazine features and books.
Prior to joining HBR, Carmichael was a sports columnist for the Boston Metro and a researcher for syndicated Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Ellen Goodman. Her writing has appeared in Boston Magazine, The Boston Globe, and Politico, and she is a regular speaker at events like SXSW, the Drucker Forum, and Thinkers50. She graduated from Brown University.
She will report to Barron’s editor Katherine Bell.
As a story editor, Erin McCarthy will edit stories for both digital and print and collaborate with reporters and our design and audience teams on the digital presentation and promotion of our stories.
McCarthy most recently worked at Newsday, where she was an editor on the Long Island desk, working on breaking news, trending stories and alternative storytelling. But her roots are in financial journalism. She started out as a reporter with Dow Jones Newswires and The Wall Street Journal, covering emerging markets and foreign exchange, and then corporate news with the real-time desk.
She later was part of the Journal’s Greater New York section, focusing on digital editing and social media. Before become a journalist, McCarthy taught middle school English and social studies in New York City. She graduated from Mount Holyoke College and the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism. A New Englander at heart, McCarthy now lives on Long Island and spends most of her free time chasing after her 3-year-old, Iris.
She will report to Dan Hirschhorn.
