Baltimore Sun biz editor killed

Baltimore Sun business editor Tim Wheatley was killed in a car crash Monday morning while driving his daughter to school in Baltimore County, according to news reports.

Nick Madigan of the Sun writes, “Staff members at The Sun were informed of Wheatley’s death by J. Montgomery Cook, the paper’s editor, in a hastily convened meeting in the newsroom. Later, he released a statement that described Wheatley as ‘a terrific journalist and an accomplished editor’ as well as a ‘wonderful colleague.’

“‘Our hearts are heavy with loss,’ Cook said. ‘Tim cared about those he worked with and those who worked for him. During his first three years at The Sun, Tim’s drive and determination led the Sports section to numerous national and regional awards. Earlier this year he took the helm of The Sun‘s business section and worked with his staff to deliver articles of great insight and importance to readers. We will miss him greatly.’

“Before being hired at The Sun, Wheatley had spent six years as assistant managing editor for sports at The Indianapolis Star. Prior to that, he had worked at The Minneapolis Star Tribune, The Florida Times-Union and The Spartanburg Herald-Journal.”
